General Questions

If you think your device needs some attention, please let us know either through the website, over the phone, or via email. Our support team will work with you to troubleshoot any issues and set up a repair as needed. Some issues we can resolve in the field, other issues we need to see the device in-house to fix. In any case, our goal is to always ensure you have a device that's working properly.
Every PMV receives a 2-year warranty which is tracked by the serial number, so there's no need to register your device with us after receiving it. If any issues arise with your unit, please don't hesitate to get in touch with us right away.
Some samples are tricky to test or give weird readings. We're here to help! Send a description of the sample you're testing, how you're testing it (which device you're using), and the result you're getting. Our team is happy to help you understand and assess the results.
It's very rare, but sometimes our devices get knocked around in shipping or something gets broken. It happens, and we're here to correct it.
Every PMV comes with a calibration disk, which can be used to check the calibration of the device. Switch your device to the "Calibrator" setting, and then test the calibration disk like you would with any other coin. The cal-disk should always test in the brackets/in the green. If it doesn't, give us a call!

PMV Original Questions

Each sensor on the PMV Original has its own minimum diameter requirement. As a rule, samples must fully cover the face of the sensor being used in testing. If your sample is smaller than the wand you are using, move down a size. With the onboard sensor, samples must fully cover the black circle on the face of the unit. If you encounter a sample which is smaller than the circle, it would be necessary to use a wand for accurate results.
The SM1601 is the latest model of the PMV Original. This model offers a new USB-C charging port and two new numerical measurement modes for advanced users. Additionally, you can now update the software of the PMV Original at home.
The DISPLAY MODE button can be used to switch the PMV Original between the Box, Resistance and Conductance display modes. Box mode, displayed by default, refers to the familiar box and bracket style of displaying results: if the measured resistivity is consistent with the expected alloy, the box will be within the brackets. Resistance and Conductance mode instead display the raw numerical value measured by the device, which can be quite useful for troubleshooting and advanced use.
When the PMV Original gets low on charge, the green LED next to the power button will begin to blink slowly. Once connected to power, the LED will illuminate and remain lit until the battery is fully charged, or the unit is disconnected from the charger.
If the PMV Original displays a box within the brackets, this indicates that the measured resistivity of the sample matches the expected resistivity for the alloy you have selected. A "*" symbol would indicate a slightly inconsistent resistivity. We recommend checking the dimensions and weight of the sample. An "X" would indicate a questionable sample, which is likely the wrong alloy. We recommend confirming the dimensions and weight, as well as performing any other non-destructive tests at your disposal. An arrow symbol to either the left or right indicates a highly questionable sample, and that the metal is very likely the wrong alloy. If you would like any help interpreting the results from your PMV, please give us a call!
With the update to the SM1601, the behavior of the two green sensor LEDs on the Original has changed. These LEDs will only illuminate when a sample is in contact with a wand or the onboard sensor. On SM1501 units, the wand light or onboard sensor light will remain constantly illuminated depending on which sensor is selected.

PMV PRO Questions

The PRO's two onboard sensors each have their own minimum diameter requirements. You can easily check if your sample meets the minimums for a sensor by comparing it to size of the thick black circle on the unit beneath either sensor. For accurate results, a sample must fully cover the black circle.
When using the "Pure" Silver setting, .999 Silver will often test within the yellow range, and .9999+ Silver will test in the green. Despite the yellow readings, as long as a .999 Silver sample passes the dimension verification test, it can be considered genuine. You may also check .999 Silver with the "Silver Eagle - Chk Size" setting in the "Select Coins" view, but it's still essential to perform the dimension verification test with this setting as well.
The SM2701 is the latest model of the PMV PRO and features an upgraded numerical keypad which allows for quicker custom weight entry. Both the SM2601 and SM2701 offer the same testing capabilities.
Occasionally, you may see odd thru readings on your PMV PRO or odd thickness readings. We recommend performing a thickness recalibration if this occurs. Simply hold the CAL button for three seconds and follow the instructions on this display. If you need help, give us a call!
See our the "Database Update" page under the "Resources" tab. If you would like real-time assistance with the database update process, give us a call!

PMV Investor Questions

The Investor's onboard sensor and three wands each have their own minimum diameter requirements. You can easily check if your sample meets the minimums for a sensor by comparing it to size of the black circles beneath the sensor. For accurate results, a sample must fully cover the black circle. When using a wand, the wand must be fully covered by the metal sample for accurate results.
In the event that the resistivity results are jumping from one side of the range to the other, evaluate your surroundings and move away from any Wi-Fi enabled devices, such as your home Wi-Fi router. Although the readings will constantly update slightly in normal conditions, close proximity to Wi-Fi equipment can sometimes cause strange readings.
The Investor and PRO both offer thru resistivity testing and density testing. The Investor is best for individuals who are testing samples which do not regularly exceed about 10 ozt in size. The Investor's onboard sensor can test all the way through samples up to 10 mm thick. The PRO is best for users who need to test larger samples.
The Investor is a completely standalone unit, like the PRO, and does not offer wireless connectivity to a mobile phone or tablet. The Investor does have a PC Interface which you can use with a wired connection to a Windows-based PC.
